Four Miles

I tried to put off my run today when I got home from work and grocery shopping. It would have been more fun to (continue to) stuff my face with Girl Scout cookies, but knowing I have a long run planned for Wednesday, I felt like my legs needed another work out before then. I jumped on the treadmill and ran 4 miles. I had a great pace today! My hip started to hurt again after about a mile. I think I need to spend time stretching it out every day. I remember it being injured when my hubby and I took karate a few years ago. Oh well, these things happen. Hopefully it will calm down again once I have a regular running schedule!

I think that I'm going to have to start running before work, at least once or twice a week. I'm not sure how else I'll get 4 runs in a week. I'm not a morning person in any way, so this will be a huge deal. I'm the kind of girl that wakes up with exactly enough time to shower and get out the door without being late. I frequently eat breakfast in the car. So, to get up an hour earlier than required is going to take some willpower! We'll see how it goes!

I Took Ten Days Off

I had a very busy week last week, and the beginning of this week. With starting a new job and events at church every day for a full week, running sat on the back burner. My legs started to ache after a few days. "Just run! Do a short one, but RUN!" Nope, sorry, I need to rest. Saturday afternoon came, with nothing left on the agenda, and instead of jumping on the treadmill and doing a 5k, I just sat on the couch. I'm not against resting; I think we all need it. I'm hardly a work-aholic or an over-achiever. I love sitting on the couch, watching a good movie, with a German Shepherd head in my lap. Doesn't get much better than that.

However, taking 10 days off from running is not a good idea for me. I wish I'd done at least 2 or 3 maintenance runs on the treadmill.

I resigned myself to run today. Since I missed a long run this week, I figured, I'll set my iPod for 8 miles. Maybe I'll do 10, after all, I haven't increased my distance for at least a few weeks. Today's the day to do it!!

Well, let me tell you, that after 10 days off, my cardio took a vacation. During the first mile, my calves screamed at me. It got warm, so I took off my outer layer and tied my jacket around my waist. That helped so much, but then my bottle of Gatorade and my cell phone in my pockets stabbed me in the thighs with every bounce.

I watched the Biggest Loser this morning on Hulu. They were running on treadmills and most of them were really gasping and panting. I thought how it had been a while since I've run that hard. Well, I did today. My lungs fought me with every step.

I managed to do 5k. Maybe in a few days I can do another long run, but not today. And not after 10 days off.

Snowy Day

We are in the midst of a snow storm! It started mid-morning and is supposed to last through the night.

I had been planning my long run for a week. I knew I had Tuesday off so that was the day to do it! Getting into the swing of working again is taking a little time. This weekend is Youth Week(ish) at church, so I'll be busy every night and day until next Thursday. Today was my only chance to get that long run in.

I looked at the weather, and it said that at 12pm it would be a warm 27 degrees farenheight (it appears you can spell it either farenheight or farenheit. I'm guessing one is American and the other is Canadian/British. Do you know which is which? Enlighten me!). I opened the shutters to keep an eye out for snowflakes while I played my silly Facebook games. The snow started at about 10am, so I decided to get my running gear on and head out. My plan was to be finished before there was too much snow to run in.

It was nowhere near 27 degrees, and it felt like it was in the single digits. I wore gloves, but my fingers were so cold they hurt. I found myself wishing I'd worn mittens on top of the gloves. I pulled my neck warmer thing up over my nose, and that did help a lot. I had a little, two inch area of my face uncovered - just enough to see. I contemplated only doing 5k and heading home. Who could blame me with this weather? Someone who runs in the falling snow in temperatures like this has a screw loose.

The human body is so amazing. After a cold mile and a half, my hands started sweating. I took my gloves off. My face and neck were too warm, so I pushed my neckwarmer down and unzipped my jacket a little. It does not make sense to me that I was comfortable enough to run in the snow with no gloves on and my jacket half unzipped. Amazing thing, the human body!

I keep taking new routes in our subdivision to keep things from getting boring. I did a loop around the house of about 1.5 miles. When passing the house the first time, I quickly decided that was a bad idea. I started thinking, "Oh! Next time around will be 3 miles... I can stop then!" After that, I turned away from home. If I wanted to go home early, I'd have to run at least a mile to get there.

I did do some loops around the lower part of our sub. I followed my footprints in the snow. There were some sidewalks where there were more than one set of footprints, so I'd try to find my own.

It was a pretty good run! I felt pretty tired the whole time, but finished strong. I was getting ice crystals on my eyelashes, which made me happy. I remember that happening a lot when I was a kid. I couldn't open my eyes all the way, it got so bad. And looking through sparkly ice-vision gave the run almost a romantic feel to it. Actually, no, no it didn't. It was a run, and it was difficult, and I had to push it to finish it. But the frozen eyelashes part was fun.

Stomach Cramps!

Oh what fun... I was able to leave work 4 hours early today! Woo hoo! I decided to take advantage of that by going for a run outside. I set my iPod for 10k. I chose a different route around the neighborhood to keep it interesting. At about 2 miles, I started getting stomach cramps. The half marathon stomach cramps. What's up with that? It hurt. About every half mile I had to stop, double over and let the cramp pass. Ow. Good times.

Thankfully my hip did not hurt me! I noticed it aching a little bit this week at work, while sitting for hours on end. But not while running. Hopefully I'm over that.

My arches are starting to hurt after a run, and I don't feel like I have enough support in my shoes anymore. I'll probably be going shopping in the next month or two for new runners. That is both exciting and irritating. :)

Despite the cramps, I had a pretty good pace!

Maintenance Week!

My goal for this week is maintenance... I'm hoping for a long run on Saturday, but we'll see.

I ran four glorious miles today, at a good pace, on the treadmill. It felt so great after a long, draining day.
